Consumers sets trends for soft drinks packaging

Euromonitor International partnering ANUFOOD Brazil 2020 beverage and food trade fair publishes a study that shows sustainability as a market demand.

A report published by Euromonitor International requested by the ‘Packaging’ industry in Brazil shows that the correct disposal of the residues and waste have received increased attention by the Brazilian consumers. According to the report, there is a wide offer for solutions in sustainable packaging alternatives for the soft drinks sector in Brazil, which aims to impact an increasing number of consumers concerned about the environment. For this reason, the consumer has adhered to the guidelines of environmental organizations as a result of the struggle against the use of plastic, which led people to looking for alternative products.

The 2019 Conscious Consumerism Indicator, from SPC Brazil, validates Euromonitor’s study and points out that 83% of the national population prefers to consume products in recyclable packaging. The survey also shows that, for 75% of respondents, the supplier’s commitment to environmental and social actions makes a difference at the time of purchase.

The sustainable packages issue will be debated during the second edition of the   ANUFOOD Brazil – International Trade Show Exclusively for the Food and Beverage Sector, from 9th to 11th March at São Paulo Expo.

The Euromonitor survey also indicates that there are other greener packaging solutions that are becoming more popular like the use of biodegradable materials, thus increasing the demand for those products. Within the sustainability line, the study points out that carbonated returnables, in addition to being popular, also provides more competitive prices.

“The concern for the environment was one of the most significant themes in the last year and it was identified as one of the main trends in consumer behavior for the coming years. Consumers are increasingly seeking to reduce the environmental impact regarding their consumption pressuring organizations to start offering sustainable solutions. This demand drives the creation of new business models, which avoid the waste generation and draw the attention of consumers who are adopting sustainability through longer-lasting products or even more efficient distribution logistics. Subscription models and reusable or refillable options have gained traction as solutions to meet ethical, environmental and sustainability demands. As more companies integrate reusable packaging or sustainable logistics strategies into their product lines, this option will be less of a competitive advantage and more of an essential feature for brand differentiation. In any case, it is important for consumers to understand that the critical point is not only the material used for the packaging manufacture but also how they dispose and separate this waste themselves”, says Angelica Salado, research manager at Euromonitor International.

According to Alexandre Jobim, president of ABIR – Brazilian Association of Soft Drinks and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, packaging is primary to the non-alcoholic beverages industry. “It´s an important calling card, in other words, it will be the consumers’ first impression of the product on the shelves. Therefore, the more attractive form, design, color and sustainability features the more it will captivate the consumer. Besides the visual aspect, the shelf life of our products is also essential, guaranteeing food safety for our consumers”.

The ABIR promotes its Conference alongside with ANUFOOD Brazil on March 10, which includes the main themes of the sector that is responsible for more than 2 million direct and indirect jobs, with a collection of R$13 billion in taxes and a production volume of 31 billion liters per year.

The ANUFOOD Brazil, the only fair exclusive for the food and beverage sector of Latin America will happen between March 9th and 11th, in São Paulo. Brazilian version of the Anuga, the world´s biggest fair of the sector, will occupy an area close to 4 thousand sq. M. covering 11 international pavilions. It is expected to receive over 10 thousand qualified visitors for its second edition.
