ABIA reaffirms partnership for the 2nd edition of ANUFOOD Brazil in 2020

Partnership will promote the participation of the large Brazilian manufacturers in the exhibition, which for next year will have 60% more exhibition space compared to the first edition.

ABIA (Brazilian Association for Food Manufacturers) will repeat its successful partnership with Koelnmesse Brazil for the 2nd edition of ANUFOOD Brazil, International Exhibition Exclusively for the Food and Beverage Sector, which will be held on March 09 – 11, 2020 in the São Paulo Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.  For João Dornellas, Executive President of ABIA, the partnership’s objective is to support the participation of its member companies in the exhibition, which include the big players in the industry.

“The first edition of ANUFOOD Brazil received more than 7,000 visitors from 39 countries and can be considered a success.  Events such as this one are very important in order to attract investments and foster new business growth in the the food industry in Brazil, the most important industry for our economy,” says the executive.

With these results in 2019, Dornellas considers that the event exceeded expectations, not only of the association, but also of its member companies.  “ABIA was very satisfied with the event’s results, especially with the high level of discussions that were promoted and the quality of the exhibiting companies,” he analyses.  “The food manufacturers are very keen on the initiative to bring the world’s largest food exhibition to Brazil.  We hope that in 2020, the Brazilian edition is even larger, breaking the record for the number of visitors in 2019.”

The executive believes that Brazil’s economic recovery and the accelerated return of investments from the private sector will improve the business environment in Brazil.  “In the food processing industry it is no different.  ABIA is optimistic that, by the end of the year, the market will prove to be fully recovered.  I would like to reiterate that a significant portion of the food processing industry’s revenue comes from external markets, and therefore susceptible to currency exchange fluctuations.  At this time, sales projections for growth in real terms are near 2% for 2019.  With regard to exportation, the expectation is that we will finish the year with sales approximately of US$ 35 billion, the same amount as last year.

For Cassiano Facchinetti, Director-General of Koelnmesse Brazil, the partnership with ABIA and the other associations that represent the companies in the industry is extremely strategic.  “The exhibition is completely supported by the industry’s associations, which are able to mobilize the diverse segments for food & beverages and increase the depth of the discussions and the search for innovative solutions to the common problems faced by these companies.”

As a whole, the food processing industry achieved revenue growth in 2018 of 2.08%, reaching BRL 656 billion, when combining exports and sales to the domestic market, which represents 9.6% of the country’s GDP, according to a research conducted by ABIA.

The food industry generated 13,000 new jobs in 2018.  The total investment level in assets and mergers and acquisitions reached BRL 21.4 billion, which represents an increase of 13.4% versus the BRL 18.9 billion in 2017.

The strong performance of consumption in the domestic market was maintained, according to the association, and absorbed nearly 80% of the industry’s total sales.  The total growth reached 4.3%, when combining the retail sales with the food service sales.

Exportation of processed food

Brazil is the second largest exporter of processed food in the world.  Last year, the Brazilian food industry exported to over 180 countries, which represented 19.3% of the total volume of sales.

China, as the leading importer of Brazilian goods, registered an increase of 37.6% compared to 2017.  Holland registered growth of 4%, followed by the United States with growth of 3%.

Last year, exports registered a decline of 9.8%, finishing 2018 with US$ 35.1 billion in processed food revenue versus US$ 38.9 billion in 2017.

According to data from ABIA, the food industry is the sector that employs the most workers in Brazil.  With a total of 35,700 companies, the food processing industry is responsible for 1.61 million direct jobs, responsible for 26.8% of the transformation industry as a whole.  The industry invests approximately 3% of its annual revenue in R&D (Research and Development), new factories, new products and marketing.  The food processing industry represents 50% of the exports from agribusiness and 18% of Brazil’s total exports.
